Deriving its title from a description of forms in Philip Guston’s paintings by the poet Frank O’Hara, this performance weaves a circuit of original movement, writing, material objects, and music. The performance responds to Matthew Metzger’s Collapse series, contending with the impressionistic visual and emotional gravity of the paintings, and unfolding the precise historical sources, from a video still of Yvonne Rainer dancing to Guston’s palette and scale.

New York-based collaborative duo Millie Kapp and Matt Shalzi perform the work, directed by Lin Hixson, with a text by Matthew Goulish.

Millie Kapp and Matt Shalzi have been working together on performances since 2010. They met in Chicago in 2009 and moved to New York City in 2012, where they currently live.

Every house has a door was formed in 2008 by Lin Hixson, director, and Matthew Goulish, dramaturg, to convene diverse, inter-generational project-specific teams of specialists, including emerging as well as internationally recognized artists. Drawn to historically or critically neglected subjects, Every house creates performance works and performance-related projects in many media. The company is based in Chicago and presents work for local, national and international audiences.
