Ides
March 15 - April 26
A few weeks ago, my husband and I were talking about the Ides of March. I had to google “ides,” because I wasn’t sure if it meant middle or doom.
Both suit me: the official definition, middle—as pertains to my career, my age, the date—and its ominous association, given our nation’s peril.
This show includes drawings I made over the last three years. There have been some formal changes in that time—more ink, less layering of colored pencil, collapse of figure/ground—while interests of mine remain, i.e. landscape, atmosphere, cataclysm.
Working small has been new to me. For the first time, I began to draw outside of my studio, on a couch, on a plane, in the midst of ordinary life. And while a piece doesn’t happen in one sitting, it comes close, which in itself feels novel.
